Care of your breeches from Equissentials
To help you keep your breeches in top condition, we would like to pass on to you our preferred methods of cleaning, so that you can keep your breeches clean and supple.
Quite simply:
WASH GENTLY with cool water and a mild soap and hang to dry.
In more detail:
Equissentials Deerskin Breeches love to be washed!!! {Never, never dry clean!} Think of caring for your pants the way you would care for the skin on your face ~ GENTLY. We choose each Deerskin for its suppleness and resiliency. They are tanned using natural, gentle methods, utilizing Carragheenan ~ a natural plant protein ~ as a conditioner. You are starting with the best to begin with, so it pays to take care of them. They are an investment that can last many years with the proper care!
When you first get your pants, we suggest spraying "Scotch Guard" over the entire pant, with special attention to the fabric. {Scotch Guard is available at most grocery stores} This is especially important for Whites.
This will give a protective coating that helps repel all the "stuff" one might come in contact with during the "experiences" we encounter with our horses. It also helps any stains release easier when washed. We suggest re-applying the Scotch Guard every 3rd washing to ensure that your pant can be cleaned easier and more effectively.
When your breeches need cleaning, we suggest HAND WASHING with cool water and a mild soap. We strongly suggest Leather Therapy's Laundry Solution and Laundry Rinse & Dressing. Woolite or Delicare are also acceptable substitutes. They are natural, mild soaps, and work well for all your fine washables. {For stains, we suggest soaking the pant completely, than adding a small amount of dish soap directly to the stain}. We suggest filling a tub with 3 ~ 5 gallons of cool water and adding a tablespoon of soap to the water, mix, THEN add the pant. Let them soak about an hour, rinse, squeeze out the water, wrap in a towel for five minutes to get most of the water out and hang to dry, out of the sun. Also, it is best to wash your breeches alone, especially the first 3 times you wash them.
{Please note: Do not use your washing machines spin cycle to get the water out of the pant. It is very harsh on the pant and can cause a tie-dye effect, especially if a typical clothes detergent is used, which is usually harsher than mild soaps.} Washing your breeches like this is the best thing for them. You will get the most enjoyment out of them as they will be soft, supple and ~ here is the best part ~
RECYCLABLE! When the fabric on your pant wears out, return them and we will remove and recondition your leather and put it on new fabric. {Click here for info on RECYCLING} After 4 fabrics, you get a free pair from Equissentials! So you see, it pays to take a little time to care for your breeches.
Leather Therapy
Leather Laundry Solution ~ washes away grimy soil in leather and fabric while protecting fiber feel and color.
Rinse & Dressing ~ Adds rich emollients into the rinse water. It can also be directly applied (comes with a sponge!) to WET leather to increase softness as it dries.
Dish Soap ~ Helps clean stubborn spot stains. Note: Completely soak the pant then put a small amount on the stain before washing.
Here is a list of "Do Nots" for your breeches:
Please...
...Do Not hang in the sun to dry.
...Do Not dry your Dearskins in a dryer. This is very harmful to the leather and highly discouraged.
...Do Not use regular laundry detergent. Most are too harsh on the leather.
...Do Not use bleach.
...Do Not put soaps, conditioners, etc. directly on the leather before it is completely soaked. Always soak the pant completely first.
...Do Not use those expensive leather cleaners {ie: Velveton, PPD, etc.} as they are designed for cowhide & actually draw moisture out of the deerskin.
And finally...
If you absolutely must wash your breeches in a washing machine occasionally, please follow these guidelines. We have seen many breeches just thrown into the wash ~ literally! Many just put their breeches into the washer with the rest of the wash, add detergent, then fill the washer with water. For the life of your breeches, PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS! Start filling the washer with cool water, add the soap and conditioner, letting it all mix well, THEN add the pants ALONE-NO OTHER ITEMS. Turn all washer cycles to gentle, and wash. We highly recommend you take the pant out before the final spin cycle, wrap tightly in a towel to remove excess water, and hang to dry, out of the sun.
